Can Type 2 Diabetes be reversed by going on a strict vegan diet?

Is a strict vegan diet the best thing for Type 2 Diabetes?

Type 2 Diabetes is a severe disease and a vegan diet may help lessen its damage. It causes heart, kidney, and eye problems, and a bunch of other issues that cause great suffering. There are many recent advances and pharmaceutical options to manage diabetes. But, prescriptions alone can’t put your Type 2 Diabetes into remission

About 10% of the U.S. population has diabetes1, and these numbers continue to rise.

People with Type 2 Diabetes can achieve “remission” by sustaining normal blood glucose levels for at least three months without taking diabetes medication.

There is still a lot of uncertainty around how long remission will last and what factors are associated with relapse2

Follow up with your healthcare team. This is advised for monitoring glucose changes and diabetes symptoms. The long-term effects of remission on mortality, heart health, and quality of life are not well understood. 3

Type 2 Diabetes Goals

The goal of Type 2 Diabetes management is to reduce long-term complications and stop the progression of the disease. This can be achieved through various methods, including diet, lifestyle changes, and medication.

The ultimate goal is to get Type 2 Diabetes into remission!

There is strong evidence from studies that Type 2 Diabetes can be reversed with bariatric surgery4, low-calorie diets, or low-carb diets.

All of these methods have been shown to be effective in regulating diabetes. They can help reduce weight, improve insulin sensitivity, and normalize blood sugar levels.

Vegan Diet?

Studies also suggest that Type 2 Diabetes is reversible by going on a strict vegan diet. According to Dr. Barnard’s research, funded by the National Institute of Health, a low-fat vegan diet was three times more successful in regulating blood sugars than the traditional American diabetic diet.

This is a significant finding, offering a new option for people with diabetes who want to better control their blood sugar. Unfortunately, if a person has underlying health issues such as autoimmune diseases they may not do well on a vegan diet.

A vegan diet has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity, which measures how well your body responds to the hormone insulin. If starting a vegan diet be sure to test your iron and B vitamins regularly as you can become deficient.

Insulin is vital for regulating blood sugar levels. So, people who are insulin resistant have a higher risk of developing diabetes.

A strict-vegan diet decreases cholesterol levels5 and minimizes heart disease risk.

Plus, plant-based foods are low in calories and fat. This makes them an ideal choice for those looking to lose weight healthily.

Can Aminal Fats Cause Insulin Resistance

“Dietary fat has been implicated in the development of insulin resistance in both animals and humans. Most, although not all, studies suggest that higher levels of total fat in the diet result in greater whole-body insulin resistance.”6 Animal fat is found not only in meat but also in dairy products and eggs.

A strict vegan diet is a good way to reverse Type 2 Diabetes since it’s a lot more effective than other diets. Vegans consume no animal products. So, their diets are naturally low in unhealthy fats and high in fiber and nutrients.

Before starting a vegan diet plan, speak with your doctor or dietician first. This ensures a successful journey and prevents any potential problems. This way, you can be sure that you are on the right track and making the best choices for your health. You’ll also need to monitor your vitamin and nutrient levels to be sure you don’t become deficient.
